Mosquito Joe Gives Back: Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2016

As you can imagine for an outdoor mosquito control company, summer is a very busy time around our office. However, for one week each year we take some time to step back and really focus on the reason we do what we do: the importance of mosquito control and educating the public.

This year National Mosquito Control Awareness Week was June 26-July 2.  It is one of the most important weeks during our year for many reasons. We love raising awareness abMCAW_Infographic_1200x717out the importance of mosquito control, to educate people about the risks of vector borne illnesses, and of course helping to bring to light solutions to keep your yard healthy and swat-free. 2016 included lots of news headlines about mosquitoes and mosquito control as Zika virus made its way into the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of July 6 there are currently 1,133 travel cases of Zika in the United States and 330 of those are pregnant women. And while no vaccine exists for the virus, experts agree that avoiding mosquitoes is the best way to prevent Zika and keep it from spreading.

So, as you can imagine this was a big topic for mosquito control awareness, as it was a much needed conversation. Our mosquito control services have been a welcome added defense against mosquito borne illness this year, and our franchisees have spent a lot of time speaking with their customers about this very subject. As if that weren’t enough, mosquitoes don’t only affect us humans! That’s right, they can affect our furry friends too. Mosquitoes are also known to carry diseases such as heartworm, so it’s important to keep your four legged friends protected too.  Fortunately, our barrier treatments help eliminate fleas and ticks as well.

Giving Back

Mosquito Control Awareness WeekBy far, the biggest part of the week and the one we most look forward to is giving back as a company.  For the fourth year, Mosquito Joe locations across the country partnered with local blood donation centers for our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. For every new customer that signed up for mosquito control services during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, we donated 10% of the sale to those local blood banks.

This year we had the privilege of partnering with twenty seven centers across the country and with the American Red Cross being our largest partner, this money is going to help them with the disaster relief they provide every day in our communities. The American Red Cross is always on standby to provide assistance to the military, blood disaster relief to the community, and we feel honored to be able to help with their wonderful cause. Because of our amazing customers, we were also able to donate over $10,300 in just one week to the blood centers we partnered with.

Mosquito Joe Spreading the News

Our franchisees did an amazing job spreading our message around in their communities during Mosquito Control Awareness Week. Between news articles and TV segments, the amount of people who were reached getting mosquito control information from Mosquito Joe was impressive. Check some of them out here:

We’re so grateful to everyone that made our 2016 Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign the best yet and a giant highlight for us as a company this year. Thanks to our participating franchisees, each blood bank that we partnered with, and our AMAZING customers that helped make this year’s Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign the huge success that it was.

Making Waves in 2015: Our Second Annual Franchisee Convention

For the second annual Mosquito Joe convention, we decided to channel our inner surfer with the theme Making Waves in 2015. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to kick off the year since we’ve experienced such tremendous growth and will serve so many new areas and customers in 2015. When we met last year we had opened 15 territories. This past year we had 39 territories open in 22 states and we are poised to have over 100 territories open this season. What an amazing number of families we’ll be able to give a mosquito-free yard and make sure outside is fun again!

We had such a great weekend sharing ideas, learning new tricks, and of course having some fun. CEO Kevin Wilson kicked off the weekend with a State of MoJo Address to get everyone ready for all the amazing things to come in 2015. Keynote speaker Gerry Layo of Sales Coach International had us laughing while teaching us how harding work and “owning it!” can lead to more sales. We were also treated to a presentation by Greg Majewski of Mosquito Joe of Southeast Michigan on Marketing with a Purpose. One of our favorite parts of the convention was our dinner and awards ceremony, where we relaxed over some good food and great company and recognized franchisees who stood out in 2014. We are happy to congratulate our winners:

Mo’Money Award ~ The territory that generated the highest amount of revenue in their second season. Congratulations to Kurt & Melissa Godwin of Mosquito Joe of Baltimore.

Smooth Operator Award ~ the franchisee that recruited the most new customers in a single territory. Congratulations to Hilaire Tolsma and Greg Majewski (pictured) of Mosquito Joe of Southeast Michigan.
Wingspan Award ~ the franchisee with the highest dollar volume as an entity. Congratulations to Kurt & Melissa Godwin of Mosquito Joe of Baltimore and Mosquito Joe of Annapolis.
Best Buzz Award ~ the franchisee with the highest Net Promoter Score. Congratulations to Jeff & Melissa Holmes of Mosquito Joe of the Tri-State (KY-OH-WV) Area.
Most MoJo Award ~ the franchisee that showed the most passion, positivity, and overall enthusiasm over the past year. Congratulations to Chris & Shelby Cookman of Mosquito Joe of Macon.

We say this all the time, but it is worth repeating – our franchisees are the reason this is such an amazing company. Thank you again to all of our franchisees who attended the convention and made it so special. Thanks to all the vendors that made the trip to put a face with the companies the franchisees work with every day, and a special thanks to all of our sponsors. Mosquito Joe has some exciting things in store for 2015, so be sure to stay tuned for more blog posts!

Top Five MoJo Moments of 2014

This is our 100th blog post, and as I’ve pondered what it should be about, I couldn’t help but reflect. It is the first week back in the office for the new year and doesn’t the new year always make you take a peek back at what unfolded the preview 12 months? So for the ceremonious 100th blog post and the first blog of 2015, I unveil the top five Mosquito Joe moments. Drum roll please:

  1. In January we hosted the first annual Mosquito Joe Franchise Convention here in Virginia Beach and it was truly amazing. Seeing franchisees come together and share experience, laughter and maybe a couple of cocktails was the perfect way to kick off the start of the new year.
  2. Our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign for Mosquito Control Awareness week raised over $2,000 for local blood banks across the United States. We even got our Head Joe over to the blood donation center to donate blood. It was a great week and we’re proud of all of our franchisees who participated.
  3. In January we were ranked in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 after just our first year of franchising. That was a huge milestone for us and we couldn’t have been more honored to be included among some great brands in that list.  They also called us out as a Top Franchise to Watch in 2014. In the fall we were named by the Franchise Business Review as a top emerging franchise and a top franchise for veterans. What a year for recognition for this great business opportunity.
  4. Over the course of our season in 2014, we serviced over 14,000 customers across the country. That is such a huge deal to us because as the Mosquito Joe family grows that means we’re making outside fun again for more families. 14,000 mosquito free people? We couldn’t be more proud.
  5. And last but certainly not least, we reached a huge milestone in September with our 100th territory, bringing us to 21 states in just 21 months. Combined with the number of customers we serviced, it was the perfect way to wrap up the year.

Thanks for helping make 2014 our best year yet, and thanks for taking this journey with us as you read along on our blog. Stay tuned, we know 2015 is going to be even better. We hope you have a wonderful New Year with some MoJo moments of your own.

Meet A Joe: Elizabeth & Nico Barcellos

**Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!**

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth and Nico Barcellos of Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale. Elizabeth has been an entrepreneur for almost two decades and Nico is no stranger to hard work, even at the age of nineteen. After years of living in New York and Pennsylvania, Elizabeth got tired of shoveling snow, so she and Nico (then 3 and a half) headed south to Florida for warmer temperatures and sunny skies. They soon found out that also meant a lot of mosquitoes.

Meet Elizabeth Barcellos, Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale
Elizabeth knew she wanted to own her own business and began her entrepreneurial career by opening her own nail and tanning salon. She successfully ran that for seven years before selling it and moving down to Florida. She then embarked on a career in real estate before devoting her time to Mosquito Joe. When she started thinking about opening a new business, it is no surprise she gravitated towards Mosquito Joe. That’s because in her spare time you can find her outside gardening in her yard with her four dogs.  Knowing how much she loves her outdoor time makes it that much more special to know that through Mosquito Joe she is able to offer mosquito-free living to residents in her South Florida community.

Meet Nico Barcellos, Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale
Nico’s career began as a child model at the age of 3 and a half. This groomed him (no pun intended) for entrepreneurship. He later traded time in front of the camera for time behind the wheel of the Mosquito Joe van, providing mosquito control services alongside his mother. He’s the one you’ll see pulling up to rid your yard of pesky mosquitoes. Outside of Mosquito Joe he is majoring in Psychology at Broward University and loves photography and music.

Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale launched in the summer of 2014 and the family business Elizabeth and Nico have started together provides a much needed service for southern Florida. Elizabeth says the year round warm temperatures people love create the perfect habitat for mosquitoes, explaining the high populations there. They’re so excited to make Fort Lauderdale mosquito free, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them in the Mosquito Joe family.

If you’re interested in mosquito elimination services in the Fort Lauderdale area to rid your yard of pesky mosquitoes, ticks and fleas, visit Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale’s website or call their office at 954-376-8384 for more information or a free quote.
