Celebrities Living with Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in United States. There are over 30,000 cases of the tick-borne illness reported each year. Among those are celebrities we frequently see on TV or on magazine covers; others are sports icons and some are Grammy award winners.

 Members of the Hadid Family

Yolanda Hadid, of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fame, has been vocal about her battle with Lyme disease. Yolanda has published a book chronicling her experience living with the illness entitled “Believe Me: My Battle with the Invisible Disability of Lyme Disease.” Recently, the former model admitted after nearly a year of remission, her symptoms have returned. At the Global Lyme Alliance,Yolanda said she realizes “the higher purpose of [her] journey is to continue to bring awareness to this awful disease until the change is made.” Her children, Bella and Anwar Hadid, also have the chronic illness.

Shania Twain

The country singer opened up about her struggle with Lyme disease in July 2018, stating she suffered from dysphonia which affected her vocal cords. The disease kept her from touring and even singing. “I never thought I would sing again,” Twain said. Thanks to physical therapy and vocal training, Twain has released a new album and resumed touring.

Alec Baldwin

Nearly 18 years ago, the actor was bitten by an infected tick. The result was numerous bouts of severe Lyme disease symptoms. Because of his struggle, Baldwin is vigilant in checking his children for ticks after they’ve been outdoors. “I want my kids to grow up riding horses and bikes and enjoying themselves every day and not have to spend every day with us going over them with a magnifying glass to make sure they don’t have any ticks on their body or their dogs, but that is part of the lifestyle of where I live,” he said.

Avril Lavigne

In a letter to fans, Lavigne revealed she had been fighting Lyme disease. The singer started The Avril Lavigne Foundation in 2010 to support causes such as Race to Erase MS, Special Olympics and UNICEF, in addition to Lyme disease. In October 2018, Lavigne joined the Board of Directors for the Global Lyme Alliance. Her most recent album, “Head Above Water,” addresses her battle with the chronic disease. “This is me and my fight. This album tells my story,” Lavigne said.

Kris Kristofferson

Kristofferson’s doctors originally told him his deteriorating memory was due to Alzheimer’s disease. After many years of strenuous testing, it was clear the singer had been misdiagnosed; after a positive test for Lyme disease, his symptoms were correctly identified. With the proper treatment, Kristofferson’s condition improved. A friend said of the iconic artist, “Kris is as sharp as he’s been in the past 20 years because of his treatments.”

Tom Seaver

In 1991, the former New York Mets pitcher was diagnosed with Lyme disease. At the time, “Tom Terrific” lived in Greenwich, CT and spent the majority of his time outdoors, which is how he contracted the illness. The Baseball Hall of Fame member described the disease’s symptoms as “the worst case of the flu every day.”

The symptoms of those suffering from Lyme disease are different but the cause of the illness is the same: infected ticks. These celebrities give visibility to Lyme disease and advocate for treatment and a cure. Visit Mosquito Joe online to learn more about Lyme disease and our available treatment options that provide a layer of defense against ticks to your yard.

Meet a Joe: Samantha Allen-Brown

*Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our Corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!*

A native North Carolinian, Samantha Allen-Brown joined the Mosquito Joe marketing team in January 2018. During her tenure, Samantha has quickly become the marketing software guru. She also has a passion for helping our franchisees propel their businesses to new heights using local and personalized marketing strategies. When she’s not at work, Samantha loves dancing, shopping for good deals and going out to eat!

Here are some fun facts about Samantha:

What led you to work for Mosquito Joe?

After working in state government for a couple of years, I was looking for something that gave me more freedom to be creative. The company structure and overall mission of Mosquito Joe really resonated with me. I saw it as a place where I could grow professionally and have fun in the process.

What is your favorite part about your position at Mosquito Joe?

I love that I get to help franchisees explore their area and find creative ways for them to engage with their community. There are so many different ways to do local marketing and it’s been very interesting finding out the nuances of each area.

What are the biggest strengths professionally that you bring to the Mosquito Joe team?

I’m a complete and utter nerd. I absolutely love reading and researching. This has helped me get familiar with the areas our franchisees service so that I can provide them with a high level of support.

What’s your favorite Mosquito Joe tagline and why?

My favorite tagline is: “If you’re wearing bug spray, you’re overdressed.” I’m very particular about my clothes, so the last thing I want to do after getting cute is apply bug spray.

If they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you and why?

Marsai Martin for sure. She’s cute, but she has a lot of sass and intelligence. Her character on Black-ish reminds me so much of myself when I was a kid.

If you could plan your ultimate vacation, where would you go?

I would take a tour of all the Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) countries. There’s so much diversity! I’d be able dance and eat my way through four out of seven continents!

How do you like to spend your time outdoors?

Running back into the house. If I have to be outside, it’s typically for a barbecue or some kind of family gathering. The company (and food) helps keep my mind off the bugs!

How attracted are mosquitoes to you?

I think I’m a pretty good catch, but for some reason mosquitoes don’t seem to think so.

If you were shipwrecked, what three items would you want to land on shore with you?

I would carry an iPod, a knife, and a bag of Sour Gummisavers.

Is Our All-Natural Treatment Right for You?

At Mosquito Joe, we understand the importance of having options when it comes to pest control. We offer various treatments to cater to the needs of your family and your yard. In addition to our barrier spray and misting system options, our all-natural solution is a great way to keep your plants and flowers happy and healthy. To better determine if our all-natural treatment is right for you, read more about what this treatment option has to offer:

What is it?

Mosquito Joe’s all-natural treatment is an alternative to our longer-lasting synthetic barrier treatment. There are two spray options, one consists of garlic and the other of peppermint and rosemary essential oils. However, similar to our traditional treatment, trained technicians use a backpack sprayer in order to apply the all-natural formula to the foliage on your property. This allows for precise application and effectively eliminates mosquitoes from your yard.

What can I expect?

More frequent than our synthetic barrier treatment, trained technicians treat your property on a 14-day cycle to provide effective outdoor pest control. The garlic, peppermint and rosemary immediately begin to repel mosquitoes once the treatment is applied. These aromas will continue to deter mosquitoes from your property and therefore keep them from biting you and your family!

Who should get the all-natural treatment?

The all-natural treatment is suited for all properties, but certain customers would benefit from this option. Those who have fruit or vegetable-bearing plants often utilize this alternative. Our expert technicians inspect each property, ensuring they apply the treatment responsibly and effectively while avoiding harm to gardens. In addition to fruit and vegetable-bearing plants, delicate flowering plants are also carefully considered. Also, those concerned with the bees and other pollinators on their property could opt for the all-natural treatment. Our Pollinator Protection Program is our conscious effort to minimize harm done to our buzzing friend, the bee, while knocking out our pesky foe, the mosquito. When properly applied, the garlic or peppermint and rosemary treatments do not cause harm to plants or pollinators. The all-natural treatment is a viable option for customers with koi ponds or bird baths on their property.

Those who may be sensitive to using chemicals on their property or hesitant about the traditional synthetic option could opt for our all-natural treatment. Additionally, this treatment is an option for customers who have neighbors who are sensitive to chemicals or have severe allergies to chemical treatments. Our garlic and essential oil options contain no synthetic chemicals. This allows for customers to eliminate mosquitoes while remaining confident that their property is free of chemicals.

We strive to provide quality pest control solutions and we have a satisfaction guarantee in place to ensures you’re happy with your service. If interested in our all-natural option or any of our other pest control treatments, reach out to your local Mosquito Joe today for more details or a free property assessment and quote!

Turn your family cookout into a giant barbecue for friends and neighbors. Asking everyone to bring a side dish ensures that there is plenty to eat and you can enjoy the outdoors instead of being stuck in the kitchen. Mosquito Joe believes the only thing better than sharing yummy food is to Share the MoJo! When you refer someone you know for a Mosquito Joe treatment, that means $25 off for you and your friend. It’s easy as pie!

With all these delicious dishes, make sure that the only thing getting bitten into is your dinner. Give your local Mosquito Joe a call to schedule your treatment for an itch-free yard. Don’t let mosquitoes and ticks make a meal out of you this National Eat Outside Day!

Meet a Joe: Christina Sheridan

*Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our Corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!*

This week we’d like to introduce you to a member of the Corporate staff, Christina Sheridan. A south Florida native, Christina joined our team last October as a Marketing Specialist with a focus on social media management, creative communications across various campaigns and channels, and marketing planning and strategies. She works hard to bring fresh, relevant content and ideas to our franchise owners across the country. Her enthusiasm and positive spirit make her a great fit for the Mosquito Joe team.

Here are some fun facts about Christina, so you can get to know her like we have.

What led you to work for Mosquito Joe?

My move to Virginia Beach to be with my military boyfriend (and desire to be closer to a Duck Donuts) led me to search for jobs in this area. Once I saw how much potential this company had for me and my career path, I was hooked!

What is your favorite part about your position at Mosquito Joe?

I love the neverending creativity, the collaborative team, and the opportunity for continuous growth. The occasional happy hour isn’t too bad either.

What are the biggest strengths professionally that you bring to the Mosquito Joe team?

I strive to be an open-minded, outside of the box thinker, an organized project manager with attention to detail, and an expert selfie taker with a fun sense of humor.

What’s your favorite Mosquito Joe tagline and why?

“Stop smacking yourself in the face.” Every time I read it, I imagine someone smacking themselves and it gives me a delightful giggle.

If they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you and why?

Drew Barrymore because we have the same laugh and facial expressions.

If you could plan your ultimate vacation, where would you go?

I’m excited to be checking Iceland off of my bucket list this year, but I cannot wait to plan my ultimate vacation to Japan.

How do you like to spend your time outdoors?

The more sunshine and water, the better. I prefer the pool over the beach because I hate getting sand on my hands, but I love snorkeling and I’ve even gotten to swim with a wild whale shark.

How attracted are mosquitoes to you?

I knew a mosquito once. We went out and then he never called me back. RUDE!

If you were shipwrecked, what three items would you want to land on shore with you?

Chapstick, a good book, and a Swiss Army knife because that seems practical.

If you could invite three people to a party, dead or alive, who would they be and why?

Ellen Degeneres because she’s genuine and hilarious, Billy Joel so he could perform, and my mom because she knows how to party.
