Don’t Cancel Your Mosquito Control Service Too Early!

Although the weather is warm and the sun is shining, fall is just around the corner. Summer months coming to an end does not necessarily mean we’re saying goodbye to warmer temperatures, or those mosquitoes, just yet. Canceling your mosquito control service might be on the top of your to-do list since cooler months are ahead and kids are back in school, but don’t let dropping temperatures trick you into ending your mosquito control service early! It’s important to continue with your barrier spray treatments so you can maintain a protected outdoor area for you and your family. After all, the air will be cooler and the humidity will subside; making it the perfect time of year to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine or watch the kids play in the backyard after school. We wanted to share some information around the importance of completing the full season of barrier spray treatments before you consider canceling service.

If fall is quickly approaching, why continue service?

The last few sprays are some of the most important for a couple of reasons. Mosquitoes can be tricky creatures. They lay eggs, hibernate, and can survive some pretty frigid temperatures. The only things necessary in order for eggs to hatch are water and temperatures consistently above 50 degrees. This means mosquitoes may be continually living and breeding in your yard all year long. If you end your season early, female mosquitoes will have a chance to not only make your yard a home, but also to lay more eggs before the first freeze. Up to 300 eggs at a time to be exact! It is absolutely vital that our technicians get rid of those mosquitoes and mosquito larvae, by treating unavoidable areas of standing water which will keep your yard winterized. This will also keep ticks and fleas at bay.

It’s important to continue your barrier spray treatment as long as possible so you can continue to enjoy your yard as long as possible and ensure an itch-free start to 2019. If you have any questions about your season, contact your local Mosquito Joe, and they’ll be happy to explain the process to you.

Fall sports or events coming up? We’ve got you covered.

We offer commercial and special event sprays which could be great for fall sports and events. If your kiddos play football or soccer and you’d like an itch-free playing field, don’t hesitate to give us a call this fall! Because let’s face it, there is nothing worse than trying to cheer on your kids and enjoy a good game of ball while swatting away those pesky mosquitoes. We’d love to continue to partner with local sports leagues in our communities and ensure everyone’s eye is on the ball, not their ankles. Have an outside wedding or birthday party on the horizon? We can help keep mosquitoes off of your guest list so you can enjoy that special time together with family and friends. Call your local Mosquito Joe for more details!

Don’t let those mosquitoes trick you into ending service early or overlooking any commercials or special event sprays that may be necessary. You’ll thank us later!

Beat the Bloodsuckers: Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2018

Each year Mosquito Joe recognizes the importance of Mosquito Control Awareness Week through our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Our goal is to raise awareness in the communities in which we operate about the importance of mosquito control and the amazing work of non-profits like blood banks and Nothing But Nets. Although this week falls during one of our busiest months of the year, it does not stop our passionate franchisees from giving back in their communities. This year, National Mosquito Control Awareness Week(MCAW), recognized by the American Mosquito Control Association, fell on June 24th – June 30th, and it was a memorable week for Mosquito Joe.

Mosquitoes date back to over 100 million years, which means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon so it’s important to protect your families and furry friends. Not only are they nuisances who ruin your outdoor fun, but they can transmit dangerous diseases such as Zika, West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The diseases mosquitoes carry make them one of the deadliest creatures on earth, responsible for over 1 million deaths every year. Luckily, here in the U.S. we’re able to combat these pesky bugs with a professional mosquito control service like Mosquito Joe. Our franchisees are dedicated to spreading awareness about mosquitoes and the illnesses they cause as well as working to fight off mosquito populations in their local areas. MCAW brings professional mosquito control to light and we’re thankful for this opportunity to give back.

Beat The Bloodsuckers

This is Mosquito Joe’s sixth year participating in our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Franchisees had the opportunity to partner with a local blood bank in their area or with our philanthropic partner, Nothing But Nets. Mosquito Joe locations across the country joined with local blood banks donating 10% of new customer sales from that week to their blood bank of choice. This year we were able to donate over $7,000 and partner with 26 blood banks!

For the second year in a row, Mosquito Joe partnered with Nothing But Nets, a global grassroots campaign that was established in 2006. Since then, they’ve raised over $65 million to help deliver 12 million bed nets to families in need, along with other crucial malaria interventions like diagnostic treatments and training of healthcare workers. A mosquito net sent to someone in need is just $10; for every new Mosquito Joe customer signed during MCAW, a net was sent! This year our company raised over $24,000, sending 2,413 life-saving nets during Mosquito Control Awareness Week to those in need!

Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2018

The Buzz!

Our amazing franchisees were out there rocking it in their local communities to spread awareness around the importance of mosquito control. Mosquito Joe locations were featured 131 times across the U.S. and secured 14 TV segments in just one week. We’re excited so many franchisees were able to further educate their communities on mosquito control, and how important it really is to keep our families and furry friends itch-free! Check out a few highlights below:

We’re very proud of our franchisees and so happy we were able to give back to these non-profit organizations by supporting the amazing work that they do through our 2018 Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Mosquito Joe continues to partner with Nothing But Nets through our ongoing MoJo Bites Back campaign. To support us in our mission, consider donating to our MoJo Bites Back campaign as we raise funds for malaria and bring awareness to malaria-stricken areas. It will only cost you $10 to send a net; make a difference for a family in need today

Thanks to our participating franchisees, each blood bank that we partnered with, Nothing But Nets, and our AMAZING customers that helped make this year’s Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign the huge success that it was.

Preparing Your Yard for Spring…and Mosquitoes

Spring is in the air, and so are the mosquitoes. As temperatures begin to warm up and you start to transition your wardrobe from fuzzy sweaters to raincoats, we want to make sure you’ve got some helpful tips for preparing your yard for some outdoor (itch-free) fun with your friends and family. Once temperatures stay consistently above 50 degrees we’ll begin to see some increased mosquito activity. Who would’ve thought that preparing your yard for the spring season could also prepare you for the arrival of mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water, so it’s best to empty bird baths, ponds, planters, toys or anywhere else water may gather. Drilling holes in tire swings, trash cans and recycle bins allows water to drain out easily. Repair any leaky outdoor faucets to avoid water pooling underneath them. Finally, keep your grass and shrubs cut short. Mosquitoes are shrub hoppers and gather to rest in shady, cool areas which is why it’s best to keep your yard weed-free and avoid any overgrown vegetation.

With over 3,500 species of mosquitoes out there laying 100-300 eggs at a time, they just can’t wait to start bugging us!

Once your yard is ready, get outside and enjoy some fun spring activities:

  • Have a picnic with your favorite snacks
  • Plant your favorite spring flowers
  • Get a box of colorful chalk and turn your sidewalks into a mural
  • Take a walk around your neighborhood
  • Fly a kite on a breezy day
  • Play catch, throw a football back and forth or kick a soccer ball around
  • Blow bubbles with the young (and young at heart) kids in your life

Have you pre-paid for your 2020 season yet? There may still be time to save in your area. Contact your local Mosquito Joe to get a free quote for professional, ongoing defense in your yard. Treatments are tailored to your property and our products are applied by certified and trained technicians.

Don’t forget about ticks! Mosquito Joe rids your yard of ticks too so your family and pets can enjoy outside. Visit our Tick Control page for some background on ticks, the diseases they carry and some helpful tips for keeping your property ahead of tick issues.

How Canceling Your Mosquito Control Early Can Backfire

Believe it or not, the first day of Fall is quickly approaching, which means the official end of summer is upon us. But just because we’re saying goodbye to summer on the calendar doesn’t mean we’re saying goodbye to warmer temperatures and those pesky mosquitoes. In most parts of the country, there are weeks (if not months!) of warm weather ahead, and with the temperatures cooling just a bit and humidity giving us a break, it’s the ideal time to enjoy the outdoors. You may be tempted to end your mosquito spraying season a bit early, especially if the kids are in school for a majority of the day. But we wanted to give you some information on why completing the full season of barrier spray treatments can help you avoid a frustrating start to your autumn and help your spring be a lot less itchy.

The Life Cycle of Mosquitoes

The last few sprays are some of the most important for a couple of reasons. Ending your spray season early not only breaks the barrier our services provide, it also gives mosquitoes a chance to breed. The time it takes a mosquito to complete the life cycle is 4-7 days. From the time a female lays her eggs to those eggs becoming biting adults is less than a week. Mosquitoes are tricky creatures. They lay eggs, hibernate, and can survive some pretty frigid temperatures throughout the winter months. All the eggs that were laid before hibernation can also survive the colder temps. They only need water and temperatures above 50 degrees to hatch! Cool weather like that might seem far off, but it’s only weeks away in some parts of the country. You might think the end of summer means the end of mosquitoes too, but stopping your mosquito control treatments early can backfire next year.

Avoid a Breeding Ground

If you end your season early, it gives female mosquitoes a chance to not only make your yard a home, but lay more eggs before the first freeze. That last mosquito treatment spray is vitally important to make sure technicians get rid of those last mosquitoes and mosquito larvae. Along with the barrier spray, our technicians can treat areas of standing water that are unavoidable. Examples of these are pool covers, creeks in your yard with muddy banks, or the base of flower pots. The technicians can treat these areas to make sure they stay free of mosquito larvae which keeps your yard “winterized.” If the last spray and treated areas of water are completed, then there’s no spring hatching in your yard!

We know it’s tempting to cancel service, but after a long day at school, those kiddos will be itching for some outside fun at home. We want to make sure that’s the only itching going on around your house. If you have any questions about your season, contact your local Mosquito Joe, and they’ll be happy to explain the process to you.

Don’t let mosquitoes trick you into ending service before the season ends. You’ll thank us later.
