There are several environmentally friendly ways to cut down on the hordes of flies in your yard:
- Keep it clean: Clean up all fallen fruit and veggies, spilled bird seed, pet food, and pet poop, and secure trash in clean, airtight bins.
- Bring in bugs: Parasitic wasps are beneficial bugs that kill flies without bothering people or pets. Their eggs develop inside fly pupae to eat them before they hatch.
- Homemade fly-begone spray: Mix four cups of apple cider vinegar with 20 drops each of rosemary, basil, and peppermint essential oil. Add a squirt of dish soap and two of vegetable oil. Shake and spray.

Flies are extraordinarily well-adapted to survival. They feed on waste and can travel up to 20 miles. The only way to permanently eliminate flies in and around your home is to stop attracting them. Tightly seal all garbage cans, pick up after pets, and keep food covered or put away. Deny flies the food, water, shelter, and breeding grounds they seek, and they’ll fly elsewhere.

Like any pests, flies seek food, water, shelter, and breeding sites indoors. To keep them out, do the following:
- Secure your trash: Flies see your garbage as their gourmet meal. A trash can liner can be used to keep the waste can clean and must be sealed tightly.
- Examine and repair your screens: Repair your weather stripping, too. A tiny hole sets out a welcome mat for flies.
- Store food carefully: Seal food away in airtight storage. While they like garbage, they’re happy to dine on your food.
- Repair leaky faucets: Flies are drawn to wet sites, leaky faucets, and dishwater. Rinse dishes promptly and put them in the dishwasher.
- Clean up after pets: Flies love the litter box and dog doo as places to lay their eggs. Maggots make a feast of your pets’ droppings. (Eww!)
- Maintain good housekeeping: Promptly wipe up spills and crumbs and dispose of old food properly.

Flies hang out in places where they can meet their needs for food, water, and breeding sites. Remove all sources of decaying organic matter — flies’ favorite food — from your backyard. Pick up and discard pulled weeds, spilled birdseed, fallen fruit and veggies, pet food, and pet droppings. Keep trash bins clean and closed airtight. Fix any leaky faucets. Use fly traps or fly paper. Consider hosting some top fly predators like birds, bats, frogs, and parasitic wasps to feast on any flies that don’t skedaddle.
