National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day is observed each year on April 30.  This day was created as a way to raise awareness for thousands of pets that are waiting for adoption from the shelters. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. The Mosquito Joe family feels pretty strongly about our rescues (Check out this article about Mosquito Joe of Wayne and their partnership with local shelters) so we decided to highlight some of the corporate staff members who rescued their furbabies.

National Adopt a Shelter Pet DayIn September 2016, a good friend of mine knew a woman that had just found a litter of kittens near her house and was working with Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary (PAWS) to find them homes.  We met up with her and the litter of kittens and immediately fell in love with one of the boys and his only sister who we named Murphy and Grace, named after a couple of  important names in Naval history.  At just 11 weeks old, they came to live with us in early November 2016.  Murphy is a feisty one (he demands an ice cube to chase every time we’re near the freezer) while Grace is more quiet and reserved, but both are incredibly sweet, cuddly, and perfect companions! ~ Nick Sell, Franchise Business Coach

National Adopt a Shelter Pet DayBoth Morgan and Kingston are rescued. Morgan (my German Shepherd mix) was about to go to a shelter and I just couldn’t help but love her excitement, enthusiasm and love for people. Kingston was the last of a litter in the shelter, a little sickly and infected with parasites. I was looking for a companion for Morgan because she loves playing with little dogs and when I saw him,I knew he was meant to join our family. Today, he’s happy and healthy and a big dog in a little dog’s body. ~ Jayme Sabo, Director of Marketing

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day National Adopt a Shelter Pet DayWhen a family moves away and can’t bring their cats with them, you get the best two fur brothers on this planet. Oliver (Brown stripped) and Tucker (Gray) were adopted from the Virginia Beach SPCA. After doing the math, I believe their Halloween kitties, which also explains their orange eyes. ~ Kyle Jones, Graphic Designer

Chevy the Resuced Monster

We decided on a rescue because there are so many great animals out there that end up in shelters or rescues to no fault of their own (i.e. someone’s pet had an unintentional litter, someone moved and their new landlord didn’t allow the pet). We worked with an incredible organization (shout out to the Southeast German Shepherd Rescue) to find our buddy Chevy. They work hard to pair dogs with “fur-ever” homes by matching up owner needs/personalities with the dogs. Chevy was a perfect fit for us. I’ve never had such a loyal dog with such a personality. ~ Angela Paules, VP of Marketing

Silly Lilly Billy Goat the Rescue Dog

8 years ago my then fiance and I decided to get a dog and knew we wanted to rescue because of all the great animals who needed homes. I was at work on a Friday afternoon scrolling through pictures at the shelter when I saw this girl’s face. The next morning I had him driving us downtown to pick her up.  I had no other explanation other than she was meant to be mine. She has been my best girl ever since and is now her human brother’s best companion (most of the time). Our Lilly has the quirkiest personality and we love her so much. ~ Julie Green, Marketing Manager

If you have a rescue baby you want to keep protected this year, don’t forget our services take care of fleas and ticks too. Always follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for flea and tick preventative medicines, but we can be an added layer of defense in your own backyard. Thanks for reading about our fur kiddos, we’d love to hear about yours! Buzz in and share our pictures on our Facebook page! And of course, if you’re thinking of adding to your family with a feline or dog companion, always consider adopting!

Meet a Joe: Amanda Liddell

*Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our Corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!*

This week we’d like to introduce you to a member of the Corporate staff, Amanda Liddell. Amanda joined Mosquito Joe after graduating from Old Dominion University in December of 2016 with two business degrees; one in marketing and another in business analytics. Continually working throughout her college career in digital marketing, Amanda gained experience in analytics, social media, marketing materials, and client relationships. As the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Specialist, Amanda works with the digital team on all Mosquito Joe franchisee websites, search engine optimization, pay per click campaigns, digital advertising, and more! Her work is vital to the day-to-day support of our franchise owners nationwide, making sure they are well represented across the world wide web. Some of her other hobbies include Marvel, DIY projects, and travel.

Here are some fun facts about Amanda, so you can get to know her like we have. Welcome, Amanda!

What led you to work for Mosquito Joe?

When interviewing with the company, I instantly felt a connection with the employees and was comfortable around them. During my time with Kevin, the CEO, I could hear in his voice how excited he was for the company’s future. He didn’t just explain where he wanted to be in 5 years, he explained his vision and just how he was going to make it happen. With help from his associates, Kevin has created a specific atmosphere that is rare to find. He challenges you to be innovative and work hard, but also to have fun while doing it. It is reasons like this that made me choose Mosquito Joe.

What is your favorite part about your position at Mosquito Joe?

My favorite part of my position is the optimization of franchisee websites. The management team has so many great ideas, I’m excited to implement those ideas to see the positive effects they will have down the road.

What is your favorite Mosquito Joe tagline and why?

My favorite tagline is “Itching for a solution?” As someone who is personally allergic to mosquitoes, I am always looking for new ways to stop the itching! Once mosquito season hits, I usually find myself inside just so I don’t have to deal with them. Now that I know about this solution, I can’t wait to get back in my pool and enjoy the weather.

How do you like to spend your time outdoors?

Since we live near the beach, I love to catch some rays of sunshine whenever I can! Whether its laying out on the beach, biking across the city, or going for a hike.

How attracted are mosquitoes to you?

If there was a scale of 1-10…. I would have to say 15. When it is mosquito season, it seems like I can’t walk outside without getting bit!

If you were shipwrecked, what three items would you want to land on shore with you?

My record collection, hand crank generator, and a tropical plant that produces fruit. People always joke about private islands… being stranded wouldn’t be ideal but who wouldn’t love to be surrounded by music, fruit and the big blue ocean!

Wedding Season = Mosquito Season

Not only has Spring begun, but so has wedding season! If you’ve just gotten engaged and are starting the journey of wedding planning, there are many websites you can go to with checklists on whobride to call, when to book, and what to wear. It’s an endless list of things to remember to make your day go smoothly, and of course, be the happiest day of your life. Some people rise to the challenge, some people groan but jump in head first, and others throw the papers and elope.

As you’re sorting through the budget, the guest lists, the catering menus, bridesmaids dresses and suit options, it can definitely become overwhelming. But we’re here to give you one big tip to make sure the one thing you aren’t doing on your wedding day is swatting. As we were looking through the different checklists, we noticed that something very important was missing, so we wanted to let you in on a secret that can really make your event one to remember for all the right reasons.

Make Sure Mosquitoes Aren’t on the Guest List

The idea of promising forever in an intimate setting and under springtime foliage at sunset can be a dreamy inspiration for couples planning a wedding, but when the weather is warm and the sun is setting it’s also time for mosquitoes to start their dinner. The last thing you want guests to remember about your soiree is that they were eaten alive by mosquitoes, and the last thing you want to be putting on with your wedding dress is insect repellent. Mosquito Joe offers special event sprays that can be tailored to your wedding venue to make sure your day or evening is mosquito free. Since the product dries in thirty minutes, our certified technicians can come to the property and spray the day of, making sure the property is swat free well before the caterers and DJ arrive. Make sure you add “Call Mosquito Joe” to your wedding planning checklist and check here to see if there’s a Mosquito Joe location in your wedding destination.

Since everyone has an opinion, we couldn’t let this opportunity go by without asking our office Joes their advice on planning a wedding.

Roll with it. All of it. Don’t get too hung up on any one thing, and you won’t be upset when the cake turns out to be frozen or your honeymoon gets cancelled. Or both. Which does in fact happen, as it turns out.” ~ Angela

“At the end of the day your wedding is about you.  Don’t let others make it about them.” ~ Kyle

“This is probably the only time in your life that ALL of your favorite people are going to be in the same room. Make the most of that (because it’s amazing), and get on the dance floor. Oh, and EAT.” ~ Julie

If you just popped the question or if you just answered yes, congratulations! We hope wedding planning is a fun and exciting time for you. IF not, Mosquito Joe special event sprays aren’t just for weddings, either! If you’ve got a family BBQ, birthday party or graduation party in your future, give your local Joe a call and ask about their event sprays.
