Employee of the Month | Jake Vinluan

Meet May’s employee of the month, Jake Vinluan! A graduate from St. Leo University, he obtained a degree in business management and started his career in the customer service field at Navy Credit Union and the Hyatt. Jake has been employed at Mosquito Joe for almost five years and continues to support franchisees with enthusiasm and dedication. We’re lucky to have you, Jake!

What does your job title mean? I am a Franchise Business Coach. The job title means we coach our franchisees in bettering their business, but it’s so much more than that. I look at the franchisees as family members and figuring out the best ways to help our family members be successful. We as coaches do our best to steer the zees in the right direction.

What aspect of your role at Mosquito Joe do you enjoy the most? The people I work with and the franchisees. I really enjoy contributing to the success of franchisees. Working with the people here is another reason why I’m still here. We have a lot of quality people here.

Tell us a little about yourself: I absolutely LOVE people. My heart is for the people. I’m originally from San Diego, CA. My dad was in the military and my mom was a stay at home mom. God and family are the most important things to me. My wife and I have a photography business. We also lead a marriage enrichment group twice a month in our home. We started this to walk the journey with other married couples in growing in their marriages. I am constantly striving to be better than I was yesterday. I am an optimist. Helping people is one of my greatest joys.

What’s your favorite travel spot and why? My favorite travel spot would have to be for the most part anywhere Royal Caribbean takes us just because I like the freedom of being able to visit a few locations in a condensed time and also enjoying the cruise.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? I would most likely be a writer for a television show.

What’s your favorite Mosquito Joe tagline? Stop smacking yourself in the face.

What do you like to do for fun? I enjoy spending time with family, traveling for leisure, collecting action figures, reading, watching movies, running, photography, eating, and spending time with people in general.

People would be surprised if they knew: Jimmy Fallon wanted to manage me.

What is the last joke you recall? This may have not necessarily a joke but when I was praying with my family this morning it was my daughter, Juliet’s turn to pray and she said, “God, please don’t let my mom forget to brush her teeth.” This made us all laugh hysterically.

Mosquito Control Awareness Week Partner Highlight: Local Blood Banks

Mosquito Joe & Local Blood Banks around the Country

Mosquitoes are collecting blood from us and our friends every day, without asking, but we’d rather be donating blood to a better cause. That’s why, seven years ago, Mosquito Joe partnered with local blood banks around the country to raise awareness about blood donation centers and the importance of donating blood in your local community during our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign. Continuing the tradition, Mosquito Joe locations across the country will partner with local blood donation centers for Mosquito Control Awareness Week. For every new customer that signs up for mosquito control services during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, we will donate 10% of the sale to those local blood banks.

Local blood banks play a major role in blood donations by providing about 40% of the nation’s blood and blood components. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is essential for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient receives whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, this lifesaving care starts with one person making a generous donation. In order to make a difference in the communities around us, Mosquito Joe asks you to visit your local blood donation center and donate blood today!

Beat the Bloodsuckers

Mosquito Joe recognizes the importance of Mosquito Control Awareness Week through our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign, taking place June 23-29, 2019. Our goal is to raise awareness in the communities in which we operate about the importance of mosquito control and the amazing work of local blood banks. Franchisees have the opportunity to partner with a local blood bank in their area to raise money and donate blood. Last year, Mosquito Joe locations across the country were able to raise over $7,000 and partner with 26 blood banks! We are committed to making this year even more successful. For every new customer that signs up for a service during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, 10% of the sale will be donated in their honor.*

Mosquito Joe is thankful we are able to partner with such great organizations and look forward to all of the success Beat the Bloodsuckers 2019 will bring. All of us coming together can help ensure patients receive lifesaving blood. Along with signing up for service, we are hoping you will pledge to donate blood with us and Beat the Bloodsuckers.

Mosquito Control Awareness Week Partner Highlight: Nothing But Nets

Mosquito Joe & Nothing But Nets

On May 4, 2017, Mosquito Joe and the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign announced their new partnership. As a partner, we have helped raise funds and awareness about mosquito-borne illnesses and the importance of mosquito control through our Beat the Bloodsuckers and MoJo Bites Back campaigns.

nothing but nets net

Nothing But Nets is the world’s largest grassroots campaign fighting malaria, which is caused by a single mosquito bite. Malaria is preventable and treatable and for many families, insecticide-treated bed nets are the most effective way to stay healthy. Nothing But Nets asks their customers for just $10, which sends two bed nets to those in need in sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. With the help of partners and supporters like us, Nothing But Nets has raised over $70 million to help deliver more than 13 million bed nets, along with other crucial malaria interventions like diagnostics, treatment and training of healthcare workers.

End Malaria

Malaria is a disease that rarely crosses our minds because, in the United States, malaria has been eliminated. However, nearly half of the world’s population is at risk of this disease. Malaria is transmitted to people through the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes, which primarily bite at night and carry the life-threatening disease caused by the blood parasite Plasmodium. Nothing But Nets has a goal to end malaria for good. With the help of partners and customers like you, we can make this happen.

As Mosquito Joe’s presence grows to 33 states, we provide exceptional pest control services in hundreds of communities across the country. By protecting families from mosquitoes, ticks and fleas, we are making outside fun again. Now, with partnering with Nothing But Nets, we are taking a stronger stance against mosquitoes. Our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign is one of the many ways that we are doing this.

Beat the Bloodsuckers

The Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign will take place during Mosquito Control Awareness Week, which is June 23-29, 2019. For the third year in a row, Mosquito Joe has partnered with Nothing But Nets. For every new Mosquito Joe customer that signs up that week, we will send two bed nets to families that are in need.* Last year, our company raised over $24,000, sending 2,413 life-saving nets during Mosquito Control Awareness Week! To make this year even better, make sure you give your local Mosquito Joe a call to get on the schedule the week of June 23-29. And if you are already a customer, Share the MoJo with your friends and let them know how they can help Beat the Bloodsuckers. Wondering how far your $10 donation reaches? Watch the video provided by Nothing But Nets to see the life of a bed net and how far your donation truly reaches.

Mosquito Joe is thankful we are able to partner with such a great organization and look forward to all of the success Beat the Bloodsuckers 2019 will bring. Another way that you can support us in our mission is by donating to our campaign as we raise funds for malaria and bring awareness to malaria-stricken areas. Help us Beat the Bloodsuckers and make a difference this Mosquito Control Awareness Week by signing up for a service or simply by making a personal donation. It will only cost you $10 to send a net; make a difference for a family in need today.

Home Remedies for Mosquito Bites

Some of the most exciting moments of the summer occur outdoors. Between sports, backyard barbecues, and sunbathing, there’s never a shortage of things to do! One of the most annoying things about enjoying the outdoors are mosquito bites. Who wants to spend the first few innings of their baseball game swatting? And nothing ruins an outdoor wedding like taking your eyes away from the bride and groom to relieve the itch from a bite. We know how awful mosquito bites can be, so here’s some information on how you and your family can ditch the itch this summer.

Why do mosquito bites itch so much?

Mosquito bites appear when a female mosquito draws blood from a host. (Fun fact: Only female mosquitoes bite!) These bites can appear as small read bumps on the skin or as larger swollen areas. When mosquitoes draw blood, a protein is released into the blood system, causing general irritation of the skin and of course, itching.

We all know the automatic reaction to a mosquito bite is to scratch, however, this can lead to further irritation as scratching can damage the skin and lead to infection. So, what can you do? Here are some DIY remedies you can use:

One of the simplest ways to alleviate the itch of a mosquito bite is to apply a cold compress to the affected area. A small bag of ice can help reduce swelling and redness as well as temporarily soothe any itching. If you don’t have ice, a bag of frozen peas is a great alternative. Don’t worry, we’re not judging!

If you frequently get sunburned, you likely have the next ingredient in your cabinet. Aloe vera is a great, natural anti-septic that can help ease the pain of mosquito bites. You can use aloe vera gel which is available in most supermarkets or, you can get an aloe vera plant and scoop out the fresh gel. Another method is to remove the gel from the plant, blend until it reaches a smooth consistency, pour into an ice tray, and freeze. This makes for an easy application with less mess and a satisfying cooling sensation.

Another remedy that you may have at home is honey. While it’s most famous for being a natural sweetener, honey also has a number of antibiotic properties that can help combat irritation from mosquito bites. Using this ingredient, you can get rid of the itch fast and protect the area from infection.

Typically used in skincare, witch hazel is another household item that can be beneficial for fighting the itch of mosquito bites. Because it is an astringent, witch hazel helps lessen the irritation at the location of the bite.

Using essential oils to treat mosquito bites is a trendier solution. Natural oils such as lavender and tea tree oil help take out the sting and unpleasantness of mosquito bites, not to mention the added benefit of making you smell amazing. Be mindful when using essential oils, as a little goes a long way! You only need a drop or two diluted with a carrier oil (such as jojoba or coconut) or water to do the trick. Using too much can result in further skin irritation. To make this solution a little more convenient, you can create your own essential oil roller!

The most common ways to combat mosquito bites are applying common over-the-counter items such as hydrocortisone or calamine lotion. Both of these medicated creams help to relieve itchiness on contact and provide relief almost instantly.

The best way to protect yourself from mosquito bites is to make sure that your outdoor spaces have been treated by Mosquito Joe! Don’t let mosquito bites ruin your summer. Call Mosquito Joe today to ensure that you can enjoy your backyard without worrying about bites from mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
