Making Waves in 2015: Our Second Annual Franchisee Convention

For the second annual Mosquito Joe convention, we decided to channel our inner surfer with the theme Making Waves in 2015. We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to kick off the year sinceappropriate way to kick off the year since we’ve experienced such tremendous growth and will serve so many new areas and customers in 2015. When we met last year we had opened 15 territories. This past year we had 39 territories open in 22 states and we are poised to have over 100 territories open this season. What an amazing number of families we’ll be able to give a mosquito-free yard and make sure outside is fun again!

We had such a great weekend sharing ideasWe had such a great weekend sharing ideas, learning new tricks, and of course having some fun. CEO Kevin Wilson kicked off the weekend with a State of MoJo Address to get everyone ready for all the amazing things to come in 2015. Keynote speaker Gerry Layo of Sales Coach International had us laughing while teaching us how harding work and “owning it!” can lead to more sales. We were also treated to a presentation by Greg Majewski of Mosquito Joe of Southeast Michigan on Marketing with a Purpose. One of our favorite parts of the convention was our dinner and awards ceremony, where we relaxed over some good food and great company and recognized franchisees who stood out in 2014. We are happy to congratulate our winners:

Top Five MoJo Moments of 2014

This is our 100th blog post, and as I’ve pondered what it should be about, I couldn’t help but reflect. It is the first week back in the office for the new year and doesn’t the new year always make you take a peek back at what unfolded the preview 12 months? So for the ceremonious 100th blog post and the first blog of 2015, I unveil the top five Mosquito Joe moments. Drum roll please:

  1. In January we hosted the first annual Mosquito Joe Franchise Convention here in Virginia Beach and it was truly amazing. Seeing franchisees come together and share experience, laughter and maybe a couple of cocktails was the perfect way to kick off the start of the new year.
  2. Our Beat the Bloodsuckers campaign for Mosquito Control Awareness week raised over $2,000 for local blood banks across the United States. We even got our Head Joe over to the blood donation center to donate blood. It was a great week and we’re proud of all of our franchisees who participated.
  3. In January we were ranked in Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 after just our first year of franchising. That was a huge milestone for us and we couldn’t have been more honored to be included among some great brands in that list.  They also called us out as a Top Franchise to Watch in 2014. In the fall we were named by the Franchise Business Review as a top emerging franchise and a top franchise for veterans. What a year for recognition for this great business opportunity.
  4. Over the course of our season in 2014, we serviced over 14,000 customers across the country. That is such a huge deal to us because as the Mosquito Joe family grows that means we’re making outside fun again for more families. 14,000 mosquito free people? We couldn’t be more proud.
  5. And last but certainly not least, we reached a huge milestone in September with our 100th territory, bringing us to 21 states in just 21 months. Combined with the number of customers we serviced, it was the perfect way to wrap up the year.

Thanks for helping make 2014 our best year yet, and thanks for taking this journey with us as you read along on our blog. Stay tuned, we know 2015 is going to be even better. We hope you have a wonderful New Year with some MoJo moments of your own.

Meet A Joe: Elizabeth & Nico Barcellos

**Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!**

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth and Nico Barcellos of Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale. Elizabeth has been an entrepreneur for almost two decades and Nico is no stranger to hard work, even at the age of nineteen. After years of living in New York and Pennsylvania, Elizabeth got tired of shoveling snow, so she and Nico (then 3 and a half) headed south to Florida for warmer temperatures and sunny skies. They soon found out that also meant a lot of mosquitoes.

Meet Elizabeth Barcellos, Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale
Elizabeth knew she wanted to own her own business and began her entrepreneurial career by opening her own nail and tanning salon. She successfully ran that for seven years before selling it and moving down to Florida. She then embarked on a career in real estate before devoting her time to Mosquito Joe. When she started thinking about opening a new business, it is no surprise she gravitated towards Mosquito Joe. That’s because in her spare time you can find her outside gardening in her yard with her four dogs.  Knowing how much she loves her outdoor time makes it that much more special to know that through Mosquito Joe she is able to offer mosquito-free living to residents in her South Florida community.

Meet Nico Barcellos, Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale
Nico’s career began as a child model at the age of 3 and a half. This groomed him (no pun intended) for entrepreneurship. He later traded time in front of the camera for time behind the wheel of the Mosquito Joe van, providing mosquito control services alongside his mother. He’s the one you’ll see pulling up to rid your yard of pesky mosquitoes. Outside of Mosquito Joe he is majoring in Psychology at Broward University and loves photography and music.

Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale launched in the summer of 2014 and the family business Elizabeth and Nico have started together provides a much needed service for southern Florida. Elizabeth says the year round warm temperatures people love create the perfect habitat for mosquitoes, explaining the high populations there. They’re so excited to make Fort Lauderdale mosquito free, and we couldn’t be more excited to have them in the Mosquito Joe family.

If you’re interested in mosquito elimination services in the Fort Lauderdale area to rid your yard of pesky mosquitoes, ticks and fleas, visit Mosquito Joe of Fort Lauderdale’s website or call their office at 954-376-8384 for more information or a free quote.

A Veteran’s Day Thank You

Being based out of Virginia Beach and next door to the world’s largest naval base, an air force base and a short drive to the Washington D.C. area, we are surrounded by those who are serving or have served in the military on a daily basis. A third our corporate staff are military spouses, many of our customers are veterans or active duty, and since we started franchising two years ago, we’re proud that about 20% of our franchisees are veterans.

This year for Veteran’s Day, we have even more exciting news to share. The Franchise Business Review just released their annual Veteran Report, and we were named as a top franchise for veterans. This special report features 100 franchises that were rated highest in franchisee satisfaction by military veterans who own franchises. We are incredibly honored to be featured in this list as it directly represents how our franchisees feel about their business and being part of the Mosquito Joe family.

When someone joins the military, they dedicate themselves to give back and protect the country they love. We take great pride in helping veterans find new purpose in giving back to their community by using the same skill set the military gave them to run their own business.  While defending against mosquitoes doesn’t quite compare to defending our country, we’re honored to help veterans transition not only to civilian jobs, but to going into business for themselves.  Earlier this year we were named by GI Jobs as a Hot Franchise for Veterans and several of our franchisees received great press about their business throughout the year. For example, read about Josh Lien in Austin, TX or Jeff Deiters in Fredericksburg, VA.  We couldn’t be more proud of all the veterans in the Mosquito Joe system; they’re doing amazing things in their community.

There are times when the words “Thank you” don’t seem big enough to encompass the gratitude we hold for people and their actions. Happy Veteran’s Day to all those who have served and continue to serve.

Lights, Camera, Franchise Expo!

We’ve always wanted to see our name lit up in Hollywood. Can you see it?  “Now Starring: Mosquito Joe.” Okay, so maybe that isn’t really at the top of our goals, but we are excited because Numbers Joe and Social Joe are making a big trip out west today! Maybe not to Hollywood per se, but to the West Coast Franchise Expo in Anaheim, California. If you’ll be out that way, here’s a quick recap of all the information you need about MoJo and to come see us at the show. Plus, if you contact us now (855-564-6563) we can help you get free admission to the event!

Mosquito Joe gives you a great franchise opportunity in a fast-growing industry, providing a service that benefits your community and makes you feel good about your business. We know that California is having a rough year when it comes to mosquito borne illness so with the expo taking place in Anaheim, it is especially relevant for us to educate attendees about our mosquito control franchise opportunity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it topped the charts on West Nile cases. Owning a Mosquito Joe franchise provides the independence of running your own business, but also the satisfaction of adding a much needed service to your community.

The good news is you are doing this all with a strong foundation of guidance and support from an established corporate office. Our leadership includes over 80 years combined in franchise knowledge, marketing and operations support, and a team that is always by your side. The franchisee family we’ve created the past couple of years is a unique mix of veterans, teachers, pilots, couples, entrepreneurs, and more importantly good people. Think this is a perfect fit for you? Be sure to stop by Booth #610 at the Expo. If you just can’t wait, visit our website or contact us and we’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to meeting you!
