Do Mosquitoes Spread Coronavirus?

This answer is…absolutely not.

While there are a lot of diseases spread by mosquitoes, according to World Health Organization has stated, “There has been no information nor evidence to suggest that the new coronavirus could be transmitted by mosquitoes.”

How Does COVID-19 Spread?

COVID-19

The outbreak of COVID-19 is being spread from person to person. Based on what we know, its spread occurs between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). Respiratory droplets are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and those droplets carry the virus from one person to another.

How Do I Protect Myself and My Family?

This pandemic is moving quickly, and the best practices can change from day-to-day. Follow the preventative steps recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and your local health department, as some information will change based on how serious the outbreak is in your area.

To help you stay healthy and safe, we’ve outlined some of the most effective preventative measures below.

Social Distancing

Limiting contact with people outside your home is an important step in protecting yourself and your family. Social distancing means taking measures to maintain distance from other humans, therefore limiting the chances of them infecting you with COVID-19. The easiest way to distance yourself is to stay at home as much as possible.

If you must leave the house, take the following steps to distance yourself while outside the home:

  • Stay at least six feet away from other people as much as possible.
  • Replace handshakes or hugs with elbow bumps.
  • If you touch door handles or handrails, do not touch your face; wash your hands as soon as possible.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.
  • If you are healthy, avoid contact with people who are sick.

Personal Hygiene

It cannot be said enough that handwashing and keeping your hands away from your face are vital steps in protecting yourself and others. Consider the following recommendations from the CDC:

  • Wash your hands often. Use soap and hot water and wash for at least 20 seconds, especially after being out in public, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Use hand sanitizer only when soap and water are not accessible and ensure it contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your face. If your hands are dirty, keep them away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Contain coughs and sneezes. Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw used tissues in the trash immediately. If you’re not able to use a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.
  • Wear a facemask if you are sick. Healthy individuals who are not caring for sick people do not need to wear masks. It’s important to make sure masks are available for those who need them.
  • Clean and disinfect. Both clean and disinfect surfaces that are touched regularly every day. This includes things like tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets and sinks.

While COVID-19 is already impacting life in America on a significant level, taking the necessary precautions to limit its spread is the best thing we can do to protect both ourselves and our communities.

Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP)

At Mosquito Joe, we care about making your outdoor spaces something to be enjoyed. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue, having fun with the kids, or playing a game of fetch with Fido, outdoor pests such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas should be the least of your concerns. To show our commitment to improving the lives of our customers, we’re excited to announce our partnership with the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program.  Established by the Environmental Protection Agency in 1994, the program seeks to decrease the amount of risks associated with pest management in areas where people live, work and play.

This partnership provides an opportunity to showcase the ways that Mosquito Joe seeks to protect the communities we serve. Keep reading to see some of the initiatives Mosquito Joe has in place!

Integrated Pest Management

The Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program encourages members to use an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to find innovative solutions to common pest management challenges. This approach to pest management takes into consideration the life cycle of pests as well as the environment. Mosquitoes go through four life stages; egg, larvae, pupae, and adult. Once fully matured, mosquitoes are able to breed and wreak havoc. While male mosquitoes can live up to 10 days, female mosquitoes can live as long as 6 weeks. In addition to eliminating mosquitoes on contact, our treatment schedules interrupt the life cycle of mosquito populations which make treatments more effective. We also offer an all-natural treatment that aligns with the goals of Integrated Pest Management. Applied every 14 days rather than 21, this treatment option is ideal for those that seek an alternative to synthetic products.

Customer Education

A major aspect of our partnership with PESP is educating customers on the importance of mosquito, tick and flea control. While these pests are known as common nuisances, they can also pose a number of health risks. Vector-borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease are frequently reported throughout the summer and fall months. Mosquito Joe makes customer education a top priority to ensure the communities we serve are made aware of reported cases of vector-borne illness in their local area. Sharing tips on how to maintain an itch-free backyard provides another level of protection for yourself, your family and your pets!

In addition to regularly sharing educational information, Mosquito Joe works to raise awareness about the prevalence of vector-borne illnesses abroad. Each year we partner with the Nothing but Nets foundation to provide treated bed nets to families in regions where malaria is prevalent such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. We’re proud to announce that Mosquito Joe has been able to raise over $67,000 and contribute over 6,700 bed nets to families in need.

Mosquito Joe’s partnership with the Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program demonstrates the pride we take in not only making outside fun again, but in working to improve the communities we serve. With our satisfaction guarantee, Mosquito Joe aims to provide an itch-free environment for our customers. Click here to find a Mosquito Joe location in your area and get on the schedule today!

Meet a Joe: Meredith Flora

*Occasionally we like to provide a blog post that will help you get to know Joe. From our technicians to our Corporate staff to our hardworking franchisees – we think our company is full of people you ought to know!*

From the Roanoke area of Virginia, Meredith Flora joined the Mosquito Joe marketing team in May of 2018. Meredith has quickly become our PR expert and has managed quite a bit of the Neighborly integration . She leads the team in all of our philanthropic efforts and has a passion for giving back to the community. When she’s not at work, Meredith loves browsing Yelp, trying new restaurants and shopping for skincare products!

Now, let’s dive in deep and really get to know Meredith.

What led you to work for Mosquito Joe?

I was looking for an opportunity that allowed me to utilize all the skills I’d gained from prior experiences. The Marketing Specialist role with Mosquito Joe has given me the chance to do all the things I loved in my previous jobs while still challenging me to learn something new every day.

What is your favorite part about your position at Mosquito Joe?

It’s great to be able to champion franchisees through their public relations. It’s so rewarding to see franchise owners out in their communities. Whether it’s educating the public about outdoor pests and vector-borne disease, participating in local events or giving back through philanthropy, I enjoy being able to help franchisees promote their businesses.

What are the biggest strengths professionally that you bring to the Mosquito Joe team?

I’m a pretty quick learner. I feel like I’m a bit of chameleon and I can take on pretty much any task.

What’s your favorite Mosquito Joe tagline and why?

“Tired of being the main course?” I’m a total foodie – I’d much rather eat an entrée than be one!

If they made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you and why?

Definitely Jennifer Lawrence. As much as I’d like to believe we look similar, don’t think the likeness is there. But I think she’d capture my essence well since she’s laid-back and super cool.

If you could plan your ultimate vacation, where would you go?

My bucket list trip would be traveling through countries in the Mediterranean. Not only are the views absolutely gorgeous but the food looks incredible.

How do you like to spend your time outdoors?

With a beer in my hand! I like going to outdoor concerts, enjoy hanging out at the beach and grilling out with friends and family. A cold one goes great with all of those activities!

How attracted are mosquitoes to you?

Mosquitoes like me a little too much. I told them I’d rather just be friends, but they keep bugging me!

If you were shipwrecked, what three items would you want to land on shore with you?

A solar panel phone charger, my iPhone and headphones – I have hours of playlists downloaded on Spotify to keep me preoccupied!

2018 Customer Reviews

Mosquito control has continuously proven to be a service that everyone in the community can benefit from. At Mosquito Joe we combine our excellent treatments with unparalleled customer service to create an experience that’s easy, convenient, and most importantly effective. Here’s a look at some of the different kinds of satisfied customers that we service:

The Crowd-Pleasers

Entertaining guests is an activity many of our customers love. From hosting barbecues, neighborhood get-togethers, and outdoor parties, Mosquito Joe makes these events more enjoyable by guaranteeing an itch-free occasion.

“Made our party wonderful in the midst of Louisiana summer heat.  Outside with no mosquito bites never happens for me and it did for my parents 50th anniversary party.  So lovely. I will use them every summer to keep mosquitoes away. I’m sold!”

“Wonderful!  We normally cannot sit on our patio after 5pm unless we fog the perimeter.  Even then, we are only good for 4-5 hours.  Since our very first visit from Mosquito Joe, we can be out at all times of day or night.  It is amazing.  Even in the rain and after days of rain, we were not bothered by the bugs.  We thought our only option was a screened in patio.  Nope.  Open air for us. Its football season. TV is hung (outside) and “the patio is open”.  Game on plus cornhole, frisbee golf, can jam, cooking and eating outside! Thank-you Mosquito Joe. Wonderful staff as well.  Assistant is so kind and thorough when plotting the coverage area and love our Tech.  The owners are very involved as well and we appreciated a personal visit to check on our satisfaction with service.  Thanks!  I would and will recommend Mosquito Joe to everyone.”

 The Magnets

Mosquitoes suck for everyone, but believe it or not, some people have it worse than the rest. Along with the mosquito-borne illnesses that these pests can carry, simple mosquito bites can cause extreme allergic reactions and complications for some. Mosquito Joe prides itself on making outdoor spaces pleasant even for those most sensitive to mosquito bites.

“Mosquito Joe service has by far exceeded my expectations. I am that person who comes away from an outside get together with bites all over me, itching and miserable and it goes on for days. I have had about 5-6 bites this summer and all except 2 of them happened away from home. The two bites I have gotten on my own property have prompted me to call for an extra spraying which has taken care of the problem. The extra sprays were made promptly and efficiently. I plan to repeat the service next spring. LOVE YOU MOSQUITO JOE!!!”

 The Outdoor Enthusiasts

Enjoying outdoors is a major priority for all of our customers. Whether you like to spend quality time with grandkids, play with pets, or tend to a garden, our technicians make sure to thoroughly treat your outdoor spaces so that you can do what you love without swatting.

“We couldn’t even go outside to water our garden or flowers without getting bites…now after one service we can stay outside and do our gardening and lawn maintenance without any bug spray and no bites!”

“We can finally enjoy our yard again! Kids are playing and parents are gardening/building a deck without being attacked by swarms of mosquitoes. Love it. Difference was immediate. Checked out yard 1 hour after initial application and the mosquitoes were gone.”

The Skeptics

We realize that having an itch-free yard may seem impossible to some, but with Mosquito Joe your dreams of enjoying outdoors without bites can come true! Our technicians assess every yard to make sure that each problem area is taken care of.

“I had a severe infestation I got 18 bites just walking out in my yard to let the dog go potty. I saw the Mosquito Joe signs, and was skeptical but desperate. Since the first spray I haven’t been bitten once. Not ONE BITE. I Love Mosquito Joe I will Definitely recommend them to EVERYONE.”

“Not gonna lie, I was a little bit skeptical about the services, thought was to good to be true, but after the first 2 applications I was sold and I was able to invest my yearly bug spray budget into more outdoor toys for my kids !!!”

“I was skeptical about this service at first, but my backyard was literally mosquito free during even the peak times of dawn and dusk. Also, my dogs had literally no ticks on them these past few months. It’s well worth the cost for carefree time in the backyard with my family!!”
